A modern Formula 1 team can change all four tyres in under 2-3 seconds. That’s roughly the same amount of time it takes to read this sentence.
It wasn’t always this way. In the 1950s, a Formula 1 pit stop could take over a minute. Mechanics would gather around the car, refuel it, swap tyres, make a few adjustments, and send the driver back out when everything looked good. Nobody was obsessing over the clock back then, and honestly, they didn’t need to be. Pit stop times simply weren’t the differentiator they have become in modern racing.
Today, that same process takes less than three seconds.
Before most viewers can even process what they’re seeing, the driver has already gone back to the race. What appears to be chaos on television is actually twenty people performing the same choreography they’ve rehearsed thousands of times, where one person having a bad day can cost a driver the race.
So how did Formula 1 get here? How did a casual service stop turn into one of the most intense two-second windows in sport? That’s exactly what we’re going to get into.
The Pit Crew: More Than Just Mechanics
Most of the people standing in the pit lane aren’t full-time pit crew specialists. They’re the same mechanics and technicians who’ve spent the entire weekend building, maintaining, and repairing the car. The pit stop is just one part of the job, arguably the most visible, but by no means the only one.
Which makes what they pull off even more impressive. In the middle of a race, these same people are expected to execute a precise sequence of movements under enormous pressure, with championship points on the line and millions watching. A few tenths of a second lost can cost track position. A mistake can mean a penalty, or worse.
Preparation is everything. Teams practice pit stops relentlessly throughout the season, the same movements, hundreds of times over, until they stop being something you think about and start being something you just do.
Physical conditioning matters too. Wheel gun operators need explosive hand speed and razor-sharp coordination to remove and secure a wheel nut in a fraction of a second. Tyre changers are handling wheels that weigh around 18 to 21 kilograms each, often at full stretch. Some teams now build strength, mobility, and reaction training into their routines specifically for this.
But fitness only gets you so far. A pit stop lasts two seconds, but a crew member has to stay locked in for the entire race because they never know exactly when that call is coming. There’s almost no margin to recover from an error, which is why teams put such a heavy emphasis on communication, consistency, and trust.
In a lot of ways, a Formula 1 pit crew works like a surgical team. Everyone has a defined role, years of rehearsal behind them, and one shared objective. The difference is that they have to deliver it in under three seconds.
Breaking Down a 2-Second Pit Stop and the tech behind it
Most Formula 1 pit stops revolve around tyres. F1 tyres are designed to deliver maximum performance rather than last an entire race, so teams have to carefully manage tyre wear and decide the ideal moment to bring a driver into the pits. The challenge is completing the stop quickly enough that the driver doesn’t lose unnecessary time or track position.
By the time a driver enters the pit lane, the team has already prepared the replacement tyres and positioned roughly 20 to 22 crew members around the pit box. Every person has a specific role, allowing multiple tasks to happen simultaneously.
At each corner of the car, three crew members work together. The wheel gun operator removes and refits the wheel nut using a pneumatic wheel gun, while the tyre-off mechanic removes the old tyre and the tyre-on mechanic immediately positions the replacement. This process takes place at all four corners of the car at the same time.
Meanwhile, the front jack operator and rear jack operator lift the car off the ground using dedicated jack points built into the chassis. Additional crew members stabilise the car, make front-wing adjustments if required, and monitor the stop. Once all four wheels have been fitted and checked, the release operator authorises the driver to leave the pit box.
The speed of the process is made possible by specialised equipment. Unlike a road car, which typically uses multiple lug nuts per wheel, a Formula 1 car uses a single centre-lock wheel nut. This design allows wheel gun operators to remove and secure each wheel in a fraction of a second. The pneumatic wheel guns themselves are capable of delivering extremely high torque and are engineered specifically for repeated use under race conditions.
Technology also plays an important role after the new tyres are fitted. Sensors and pit-stop monitoring systems help confirm that each wheel nut has been secured correctly before the car is released. These checks help reduce the risk of an unsafe release caused by a loose wheel.
Since 2021, FIA regulations have required minimum reaction times between certain stages of the pit-stop process. The changes were introduced to reduce reliance on fully automated release systems and ensure that human verification remains part of the procedure.
The Fastest Pit Stops in F1 History
Over the years, teams have turned pit stops into a discipline of their own. These are the fastest stops ever recorded in Formula 1.
1.80 seconds, McLaren, Lando Norris (Qatar Grand Prix, 2023):
The fastest pit stop in F1 history, and it still hasn’t been beaten. What makes it particularly impressive is the timing of this, which was set with the new 18-inch tyres that came in for 2022, which are larger and heavier than anything crews had dealt with before. Harder wheels to move, faster stop. The record stands today.
1.82 seconds, Red Bull, Max Verstappen (Brazilian Grand Prix, 2019):
For nearly four years, nobody could touch this. Red Bull put Verstappen on fresh tyres in Interlagos and walked away with the world record almost casually. It became the number every other pit crew was quietly chasing, and most never got close.
1.88 seconds, Red Bull, Max Verstappen (German Grand Prix, 2019):
Hockenheim 2019 was a race that fell apart for almost everyone, with rain, crashes, and strategy disasters. Somehow in the middle of all that chaos, Red Bull set a world record in the pit lane. It didn’t last long before they beat it themselves in Brazil, but still.
1.91 seconds, Red Bull, Pierre Gasly (British Grand Prix, 2019):
2019 was just Red Bull’s year in the pit lane. Gasly’s stop at Silverstone was one of several records the team set that season, and it’s a number that most crews would still be happy with today.
1.92 seconds, Williams, Felipe Massa (Azerbaijan Grand Prix, 2016):
This one often gets forgotten, but it shouldn’t. Williams was the team quietly pushing the two-second barrier before anyone else, and Massa’s stop in Baku matched the world record at the time. It proved that pit-stop speed isn’t just about budget; it’s about focus.
1.92 seconds, Red Bull, Mark Webber (Malaysian Grand Prix, 2013):
Where it all really started. When this stop happened in Austin, sub-two seconds still felt almost impossible. Red Bull made it look straightforward, and in doing so, shifted what every team believed was achievable.
